Poll of the Week - 8.24.2009

Scott always says that if he could only eat one food every day for the rest of his life, it would be pasta. I’ve always felt like this is kind of cheating because you can do so much with “pasta” that it’s not really like choosing just one food - it’s kind of like saying “meat” or “vegetables”. Cheating, right? It’s not a bad idea, though - I mean, my last two posts have been pasta recipes, so maybe he’s on the right track.

For this week’s “Poll of the Week”, I want to hear your thoughts on the subject: what’s your favorite kind of pasta?

And actually, since this topic is kind of broad, this week, we’re going to take the poll one step further - please write in and tell me about your favorite way to eat the pasta you selected! If you have a particular recipe you’d like to see Little Scarlet run, let me know - I’d love to give it a try.

  1. My favorite pasta right now is pappardelle - wide, extra long and paper-thin egg noodles, but I am making a lot of orzo (actulally I use riso: smaller and even more rice-like in appearance).

Risotto of couse is rice, not pasta, but I enjoy making mock risotto with orzo and riso.

We enjoy your surveys. Keep them coming!

  2. @Random Gourmet: haha, you're right, risotto is technically a rice, but i see it "classified" so often as a pasta dish, that i just threw it on this list anyway! thanks so much for reading - make sure you check back again next week!

  3. I voted for spaghetti, as I prefer long pasta, but just a note ... risotto (rice) and orzo (barley) are not pasta.

  4. @Cellar Tours: Orzo was traditionally made from barley (hence its name, which translates from Italian as "barley"), but in the US most orzo is made from semolina and is a rice-shaped pasta. Thanks for the comment, though!

  5. My son likes Shrimp with Farfalle so that's what I voted on. However, tonight it the wife's birthday and it's Papparadelle with with crab (her favorite).

  6. Spaghetti! There is something so simple about twining those noodles around the fork that makes me feel like a kid swinging my feet in the chair.
The taste is a little more adult. I like to toss the spaghetti in sliced cherry tomatoes, spinach, bacon, olive oil, butter (very light), lemon zest, and parmesan cheese.
    Mmmmmmmmm....

  7. I like to cook the orecchiette in chicken stock with baby spinach, Italian sausage, garlic, leeks, shitake mushrooms and cannelli beans - I like it because it's filling, and makes this dish look so pretty-

  11. My favorite dish is farfalle pasta with pesto sauce, mushrooms, and vegetables. For a quick meal, Bertolli's does an amazing pesto sauce you can find in the grocery store. Cook the pasta and add mushrooms sautéed in butter, peas (you can go Steamfresh too!), plum tomatoes, & sprinkle with parmesan cheese. So easy & wonderful! And it is a fantastic recipe because you can really throw in whatever you like (peppers, eggplant, etc., and change it based on how much time you have to cook/ the preferences of your guests).

  12. The shape of pasta, to generalize only comes into play with what goes on it or in it. Tubes have more surface for a given sauce to cover, or fill. Thicker pasta shapes become more prominent in the texture of a dish. Tiny pasta gives a rice like effect...etc..
